Many students in school settings never find someone they can connect with that will help them see their gift or reach their potential. By definition, a mentor is a more experienced and knowledgeable person who teaches and nurtures the development of a less experienced and knowledgeable person. What CHAMPS intends to do is to provide schools with the mentors for students the school feels desperately needs it.
What is CHAMPS?
CHAMPS stands for “Committed to Help Adolescent Men Prepare for Success". That is exactly what we intend to do. We work with collegiate athletic and leadership programs to find commendable young men with a history of success to mentor students within a school system. We contract out with the school system to assure these young men are available based on the need of the school/district.
A CHAMPS Mentor will support the school for 3 hours daily/3 days weekly. Within a school year, the contract supports 270 hours of direct student contact. CHAMPS Mentors are trained in working with students from all backgrounds and will go through all district prescribed training without any additional fees/cost. Mentors will work in a similar role as a para-educator, except they are student-specific. The primary goal of a CHAMPS Mentor is to help students stay focused on instruction and set personal goals for success.
